Good reasons for changing our lifestyles:

'Half the world's population lives on less than $2 a day, yet even this statistic fails to capture the humiliation, powerlessness and brutal hardship that is the daily lot of the world's poor'
    Koffi Annan

'Climate change to hurt poor people most'
    United Nations Integrated Regional Network

    Small steps we can take:

Do you have ideas for changes to our lifestyle that will help protect people and planet ? Please share them here (click on 'leave a comment' below)

For example: We used to fill our big refuse bin each week. Then we decided to compost vegetable waste and recycle paper, plastics and cans. Now we have a bin half the size and usually only half fill it each week.  Result: less use of the earth's resources, less dumping or incinerating of waste, less carbon in the atmosphere. (ring your refuse service and they'll swap your big bin for a smaller one, usually free of charge)

  • about walk small

I am one of the richest people in the world. And so, quite possibly, are you. If you have a solid (not dirt) floor in your house, a toilet with door, a car, a video, a microwave and a computer, you are in the richest 1% in the world.

So what about the 99% who have less than us? What is our responsibility to them? The more I do some simple research on the internet, the more I realise what a super-privileged life we have if we live in a developed country. And I find there are many ways we can make the world a better place.

One way, particularly topical, is to change our way of life in the light of climate change. It is, of course, the poor who will be hit first and hardest by global warming but whatever we do to reduce its effects will also help ourselves and our children.

The walk small way of life involves:

    an attitude that says
'I am no more important than anyone else on the planet' and
'everyone has a right to a decent life, not just me'

    walking small
    means:

using less of the world's resources

living simply and sharing our time and money with the poor*

making changes to our lifestyles in small steps

*by the term 'poor' we mean anyone, anywhere who is suffering'

Changing the world starts with the individual. Our individual journey. We all have something to contribute to making a better world. Here's how I'd sum it up:

your life can be a creative adventure, fulfilling your potential.

working with others to create a world that's just, beautiful and sustainable can be part of that adventure.

The plan--through words and images-- is to inform and motivate people to take action. I can't do this on my own so if there are individuals or groups out there who would like to help me create and run a walk small website ( research, web design, copywriting, design, artwork, finance, management, admin, support ) please let me know.
